Jay in her studio | 2025
Jay studied fashion in Falmouth before interning with Vivienne Westwood. After a year of life in the city, she retreated back to the calm of Cornwall, where she began to paint. The meditative state and calmness she finds in painting is what comes across in her work, and while she loves to play with different subjects and techniques, it’s this innate feeling of peace and calm which radiates through each piece.
Jay’s work explores a combination of real life and abstract still life compositions with a heavy focus on muted colour. She believes in the process of painting, allowing ideas to flow freely with feeling. Pre-primed colour onto wooden boards becomes a backdrop for Jay to apply oil paint in different ways; sometimes stripped back, and other times heavier creating texture. Jay believes in allowing her paintings to become what they are in the moment with no restrictions, working from ideas stored in her head. Her paintings are sculpted using brushes and a cloth, everything finding its place in what appears to be a simple arrangement of colour and subject.
Jay is now based in Bristol Uk and works from her studio at BV Studios
